Welcome to The Secret World

Recently I had a chance to play Funcom’s new MMO The Secret World (TSW henceforth) during their free to play one month celebration weekend. The results were beyond my expectations to say the least. I had heard about TSW almost 2 years ago via a co-worker; I saw the video and brushed it off, after all it was just a teaser anyway. Somewhere between then and now I lost track of the title altogether, it slipped through the cracks with me I suppose. Fast forward to a week or so ago I saw a story on one of the many game news sites I follow that there was a free weekend coming up.  I was already visiting a friend to get some games (legally) that I can’t download myself because of bandwidth restrictions. I asked him to pop it on my hard drive as well to give it a test drive. Come this past Friday I created an account and jumped in.

Hello to you all! I was in the middle of typing up a “hey, we’re back!” edition of Week(ish) In News, when suddenly I see an announcement pop up. The Elder Scrolls Online, yes the long fabled Elder Scrolls MMO has been announced!

Game Informer broke the news earlier with a reveal of their June magazine cover:

Game Informer June Cover - The Elder Scrolls Online

I will also save you from my faboyish rambling for another minute by simply quoting what they had to say on the game’s story:

Developed by the team at Zenimax Online Studios, The Elder Scrolls Online merges the unmatched exploration of rich worlds that the franchise is known for with the scale and social aspects of a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Players will discover an entirely new chapter of Elder Scrolls history in this ambitious world, set a millennium before the events of Skyrim as the daedric prince Molag Bal tries to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

The plan is for the game to have three factions competing in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor’s throne. It is also heavily implied by Game Informer that we will be journeying from “Elsweyr to Skyrim and everywhere in between.” Looks like the Khajiit homeland will finally be getting some screen time.

Keep checking back here for more information as it develops. If you would rather, you could also go directly to Game Informer’s Elder Scrolls Online hub for more info. But hey, what would be the fun in that? Plus we think you’re way prettier than they do, so stick around cause…you left already, didn’t you? Fine…

Update: Check out our article here for a sneak peak at The Elder Scrolls Online with its first teaser trailer.

It appears BioWare has heard fan complaints over their Legacy promotion. For those not aware, BioWare was doing a promotion where anyone with a level 50 character would receive a free month of game time as a thank you for their loyalty.. This angered many fans who thought it was unfair that only people devoted to a single 50 character would receive the game time. Their thinking being that if they were let’s say an altaholic they might not have a level 50, but they were still an active part of the community.

To address this concern Dr. Greg Zeschuk announced an additional way to get the free game time via reaching Legacy level 6 in the game. This seems to have quelled a bit of the anger directed at BioWare, at least for the time being.

My personal take is that reaching level 50 in SWTOR is childishly easy if people have been playing since launch, or near to it. Though I do understand being an altaholic could draw attention away from a single character for some. Either way, the new method should allow most, if not all players to get a free loyalty month; which should be nice. I however don’t really care since my account is still active until July and I haven’t even played since late-January. Oh well…
